Knee Ligament Injury

What are the main knee ligaments?

Main knee ligaments:
  • ACL — provides rotational stability

  • PCL — prevents the shin bone moving backwards

  • MCL / LCL — control side-to-side stability

Injury can range from mild sprains to complete ruptures.

Symptoms you may notice:
  • Swelling within hours

  • Instability or giving-way

  • Pain with twisting or pivoting

  • Reduced movement

  • Difficulty trusting the knee during activity

How ligament injuries are assessed

Assessment includes a detailed examination of each ligament, movement patterns and overall knee function.

MRI is often used to confirm the diagnosis and identify associated injuries such as meniscal tears.

Where surgery is indicated I will refer you to an expert colleague who would be able to guide you through your surgical options.

I place strong emphasis on explaining the nature of the injury, likely recovery timeline and the options for conservative or surgical treatment.

Treatment options

Non-surgical
  • Physiotherapy focusing on strength, stability and control

  • Bracing for selected injuries

  • Return-to-sport rehabilitation

  • Activity modification during early recovery

Many ligament injuries, including some ACL tears, can be managed successfully without surgery depending on function and goals.

Surgical
  • Where reconstruction is required (e.g., for persistent instability or high-demand activity), I will coordinate referral to a specialist knee ligament surgeon.
